Prof. Wan Decheng led the teaching team and won the first prize of teaching achievement of Shanghai Jiaotong University in 2016

       Recently, Shanghai Jiaotong University announced the winners of the 2016 Teaching Achievement Awards. The teaching team headed by Prof. Wan Decheng came to the fore in the evaluation, and with his team’s teaching achievement of the “Marine Fluid Dynamics Course Interactive Heuristic Teaching System”, they won the first prize of teaching achievement of Shanghai Jiaotong University in 2016. The Teaching Achievement Award is awarded to teaching teams who have made outstanding contributions in teaching and achieved outstanding results.
       After more than eight years of teaching practice, the teaching team led by Professor Wan Decheng focused on the most important professional basic course of ship and marine engineering—"Marine Fluid Dynamics" curriculum. In this curriculum, there are many abstract contents and tedious formulas that students often feel confused, thus the teaching team carried out reform and explorations of interactive heuristic teaching methods following the rules of cognition and always implementing the student-centered teaching philosophy. The curriculum explains the profound things in a simple way, inspires students to think independently. It changes the teaching methods of instilling knowledge like duck-feeding ,focuses on systematically explaining the basic concepts, theories, analytical methods of ship fluid mechanics and this stimulates the students' potential for independent thinking and develops students' creative abilities. It forms an effective heuristic, interactive, discussion-based, research-based and experiential teaching system.
       In the teaching process, step-by-step and heuristic teaching methods are used to encourage students to find questions in pre-class preview and solve problems through class discussions. For many contents that may lead to concepts confusion, there are summary and review after each chapter, students can form an overall knowledge framework in learning thinking through this process. Examples and exercises are designed scientifically to heip students deepen the understanding of core concepts, expand the scope of application, and acquire problem-solving methods. Through exercises, students can self-detect learning effects in order to improve learning methods. For this reason, the teaching team headed by Prof. Wan Decheng carefully selected exercises and strived for a small quantity and fine quality. In the information age, the teaching team led by Prof. Wan Decheng has developed a series of multimedia courseware, mainly highlighted the difficulties and key issues of the course and form a multimedia-based teaching system finally.Through a large number of vivid pictures and animations, students can have a good understanding of abstract concepts.
       In the context of internationalization, more and more international students are major in ship and marine engineering, and domestic students are also eager to learn marine fluid mechanics courses from an English perspective. In order to help them reading English books and literature on marine fluid mechanics fluently as soon as possible, the teaching team led by Prof. Wan Decheng had built a complete English course for marine fluid mechanics, completed the preparation of all English courseware, and collated English exercises and reference answers. It provides complete conditions for foreign students and domestic students to study marine fluid mechanics in English and the course is popular with both international students and many domestic students.
