OpenFOAM: A Year in Review

Prof. Hrvoje Jasak

Wikki, UK, University of Zagreb, Croatia

Professor Hrvoje Jasak is a professor in University of Zagreb. He is the original Co-Author of OpenFOAM and director of Wikki Ltd (CFD and OpenFOAM consultancy and development). Hrvoje Jasak graduated at the University of Zagreb, Croatia in 1992 and earned his PhD in numerical modelling and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) at Imperial College London in 1996. During his PhD he has started developing FOAM, released today as the leading Open Source CFD package under the name OpenFOAM. From 1996 to 2000, he worked as senior development engineer in Computational Dynamics Ltd (CD-adapco group). From 2000 to 2004, he worked as technical director in Nabla Ltd in charge of FOAM/OpenFOAM development. With the open source release of OpenFOAM, Prof. Jasak has founded Wikki Ltd in 2004 to provide industrial consulting, support and custom development services with OpenFOAM. Starting in 2003, prof. Jasak is working at University of Zagreb as professor at the Chair of Turbomachinery, where he runs a CFD research group. His research interests include: Numerical simulation methods (FVM and FEM), specifically Computational Fluid Dynamics. Object-oriented design, expert C++ programmer, Unix/Linux, high-performance computing. Numerical modelling of free surface flows, naval hydrodynamics and wave modelling. Mathematical modelling of continuum phenomena and numerical mathematics (linear solver technology). Dynamic mesh handling, error estimation, adaptive mesh refinement. Modelling of complex heat and mass transfer systems.

Optimisation and Machine Learning with OpenFOAM

Prof. Gavin Tabor

University of Exeter, UK.

Professor Gavin Tabor is Associate Professor of CFD at the College of Engineering, Maths and Physical Sciences, University of Exeter, UK. He started using and contributing to FOAM (as it was then) in 1994 as a postdoctoral researcher in Prof Gosman’s CFD group at Imperial College, and contributed to its early development in turbulence modelling and multiphase flow. Since moving to Exeter in 1999 he has developed a strong research group centred on OpenFOAM, with current interests in optimisation (Adjoint and machine learning), offshore renewable energy, and physical modelling (scour, combustion, multiphase flow etc). He is a long serving member of the OpenFOAM Workshop committee, helps organise the UK and RI OpenFOAM Users Group, and is active in the CCP-WSI and ResIn (UK-China ORE) consortia.

Advanced CFD for optimal hydraulic turbine component design

Prof. Francois Guibault

Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal

Professor Francois Guibault is a faculty member of the Department of Computer Engineering and Software Engineering at Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal since 1999, and director of the MAGNU Laboratory, pursuing research in the field of numerical geometry, mesh generation and CFD. His main expertise lies in the field of high Reynolds number incompressible flow simulations, with a special interest for a posteriori mesh adaptation and optimal control. For more than 20 years he has led major research projects on the topics of geometric modeling, analysis by numerical simulation and shape optimization of hydraulic turbomachinery components, in collaboration with several major companies, including Andritz Hydro, Hydro-Québec and Bombardier Aerospace. Through these partnerships, he has contributed to the development of advanced simulation-based analysis and design methodologies and software systems which are now used daily in industry. He is the author of over a hundred scientific papers and has been involved in the development and promotion of OpenFOAM for more than 10 years.

HopeFOAM: High Order Parallel Extensible CFD Software

Prof. Xu Xinhai

National Innovation Institute of Defense Technology

Professor. Xu Xinhai received his B.S. and Ph.D degrees in computer science at the National University of Defense Technology(NUDT), China, in 2006 and 2012 respectively. From 2012 to 2017, he worked at the State Key Laboratory of High Performance Computing, NUDT. Now, he is an Associate Professor of the National Innovation Institute of Defense Technology(NIIDT) and in charge of the Exercise Group, which aims at developing open source software packages for large scale computational science and engineering, such as HopeFOAM, a major extension of OpenFOAM to provide higher order finite element method and other numerical methods for computational mechanics. His currently research interests include high performance computing, CFD software framework, artificial intelligence algorithm and robot simulation.
